DOT Snapshot 2026: What People Mean (FMCSA / SAFER Company Snapshot)
People say DOT snapshot when they want the public FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot — not Motus, not a credit file, not a CSA percentile printout. Pull a carrier below, then confirm on official SAFER.

DOT Snapshot 2026
Key Takeaways
- DOT snapshot, FMCSA snapshot, and SAFER company snapshot are the same public-research job.
- Our other guides cover each field and the government walkthrough.
- Search USDOT for an exact match. Name search returns lookalikes.
- Motus is the Company Official’s filing system. SAFER is still the public card.
- URS and legacy portal registration went dark May 14, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. ET — do not file in URS.
- Primary action on this page is the lookup — not a phone tree for Motus support.
Where to go for more detail
What people mean by DOT snapshot
Brokers, shippers, insurers, landlord-yards, and drivers still check a DOT snapshot before they tender freight or accept a job. FMCSA never sold a product with that exact label. The record they want is the SAFER Company Snapshot: a concise public electronic record of a company’s identification, size, commodity information, and safety record, including a safety rating if one exists, a roadside out-of-service inspection summary, and crash information. FMCSA publishes it one carrier at a time, free, with no login, at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx.
Typical fields: legal name and DBA, physical and mailing address, phone, USDOT number, MC/MX/FF if issued, entity type (carrier, broker, freight forwarder), operation classification, cargo carried, power units and drivers from the last MCS-150, operating authority status, insurance/surety flags, Out of Service date if any, about 24 months of inspections and crashes, and a safety rating of Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory, or none.
It is a research starting point. It is not Motus. It is not Licensing & Insurance history by itself. It is not SMS percentiles. When you need every labeled field, open the FMCSA snapshot guide. When you need click-by-click on the .gov search form, open SAFER snapshot. A practical third-party walkthrough of the same official card: motusdirectory.com/guides/safer-company-snapshot/.
How to pull a DOT snapshot in 2026
- Use the lookup above (primary CTA on this page) or carrier lookup. Prefer the USDOT number. Name search returns near-duplicates and DBAs that do not match the truck door.
- Read identity, equipment, and inspection context. Click through for the full public record when the tool offers it.
- For a hiring, insurance, lease-on, or tender decision, confirm the same USDOT on official SAFER. If you own the company, also confirm live registration in Motus.
- Save a dated PDF (for example 2026-09-01_USDOT-2247289.pdf) so you have an audit trail.
Step-by-step on the government site also lives in how to use the SAFER system and verify carrier authority.
USDOT Beats the DBA
Go / no-go fields on a DOT snapshot
Run these in order. Stop at the first hard no. Longer checklist: FMCSA snapshot go/no-go.
Authority. Must read Authorized for the work you are hiring. Not Authorized or revoked means they cannot legally haul for hire.
Insurance / surety on file. For-hire carriers need BMC-91X liability (FMCSA minimum often discussed at $750,000; many brokers require $1 million). Brokers need BMC-84 or BMC-85 at the current statutory amount. No filing, no load.
Out of Service date. If populated and current, the carrier cannot legally operate. Walk away.
Identity match. Legal name, USDOT, phone, and address should match the rate con, W-9, and COI.
MCS-150 age. A biennial more than two years old is a yellow flag. FMCSA can deactivate a USDOT for a missed filing — confirm in Motus if you own the number.
Safety vs fleet size. Three crashes on a 2-truck operation is not three crashes on a 100-truck fleet. Crash records do not assign fault. Pair with CSA / SMS and safety ratings.
Verbal filings do not count
Motus replaced URS — May 14, 2026
FMCSA’s USDOT Registration System is Motus (Latin for movement). It is the centralized platform for USDOT numbers and operating-authority registration. Official explainer: Move into Motus.
According to FMCSA, registration options in the legacy FMCSA Portal were no longer available beginning Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Unified Registration System (URS) went permanently offline for new USDOT registration applications. Company Officials now claim or apply for a USDOT, submit biennial updates, change name and address, add authority, and reinstate or inactivate a number in Motus, typically with a Login.gov identity. Public users can search an entity’s registration record in Motus and view the FMCSA Register.
Motus did not delete SAFER Company Snapshot. Brokers still pull the snapshot for identity, operating status, inspections, and crashes. Motus is where the people who own the USDOT keep the record current. Do not send Login.gov credentials to O Trucking or any commercial site. Since the 2026 cutover, treat Licensing & Insurance (L&I) as historical; confirm new Motus-era authority and insurance in Motus, not from a stale L&I printout.
If Motus access was rocky after launch, FMCSA has issued operational notices (including temporary biennial-update relief for some entities). Those notices change. Read the live message on motus.dot.gov and FMCSA registration pages — not a screenshot from May.

Common DOT snapshot mistakes
- Searching the DBA and booking the cousin LLC with a similar name.
- Treating Motus login success as a public safety snapshot. Different systems.
- Paying a third-party PDF mill for the same SAFER HTML.
- Using a 2024 URS tutorial after May 14, 2026.
- Skipping the dated PDF, then arguing later about what the card showed on tender day.
Where O Trucking fits
We publish research and we dispatch owner-operators. The lookup on this page exists so you can screen a USDOT without us pretending to be FMCSA. If the snapshot looks clean and you have your own authority, freight is a dispatch conversation. If you are taking a company driving job, still pull the snapshot — see CDL jobs.
Why the DOT snapshot confuses people
People do not know the official name
DOT snapshot is the spoken phrase. SAFER Company Snapshot is the government name. Knowing they are the same record saves you a search.
Motus confusion after the URS cutoff
Filing moved. The public card did not vanish. Saying that clearly is the whole job of this guide.
Who actually uses a DOT snapshot
Brokers pull it before they tender. Shippers pull it before they add a carrier to a routing guide. Insurers pull it at quote time. Drivers should pull it before orientation so they are not leasing onto a dead MC. Landlords of truck yards pull it. Factoring companies pull it. The name is casual; the habit is professional. If you only screenshot a load board score, you are not doing the same job as a snapshot check.
Owner-operators we dispatch are expected to care about the broker’s authority as well as their own. The same public card works in reverse: you can look up the broker MC. Pair snapshot flags with days-to-pay tools; the snapshot will not tell you they pay in 45 days. See how to verify freight brokers.
Make the PDF a habit, not a panic move
When a load goes unpaid or a double-broker argument starts, the first question is what you knew on booking day. A dated SAFER PDF plus a matching rate confirmation is a file, not a memory. Name files with ISO dates and the USDOT. Store them where your factor or attorney could find them. Re-pull if the load is delayed more than a few days — authority can change while freight is in transit.
Census data refreshes on FMCSA’s schedule, not yours. A filing that went in this morning may not show tonight. That lag is why “it just posted” is not a tender green light. Wait until the official snapshot agrees, or call the insurer for a written confirmation that names the USDOT. Then look again. The lookup on this page is the start of that loop, not the end of it.
Company Officials who need to change the record belong in Motus with Login.gov — not in a comment box on a dispatch website. We will not take your password. We will not file your biennial. We will show you the public card and send you to motus.dot.gov for the rest. That split is the main thing to understand after the May 14, 2026 URS cutoff.
Drivers should pull a DOT snapshot too
The query is not only for brokers. A CDL job offer is an attachment of your record to someone else’s USDOT. If that MC is unauthorized or out of service, orientation is a waste of a bus ticket. Pull the snapshot the same day you get the offer letter. Match the legal name. If they will not give a USDOT, you do not have an employer — you have a pitch. Career context: CDL jobs.
Lease-on and “run under our authority” deals deserve an even colder read: you inherit their CSA story. The snapshot will not show the truck note, but it will show whether the entity can operate. Pair it with lease-purchase red flags.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DOT snapshot?
There is no FMCSA product literally branded “DOT snapshot.” People who use that phrase almost always want the public FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot: legal name, USDOT, MC if issued, address, fleet size, inspections, crashes, safety rating if any, and authority/insurance flags. This guide explains it. Field-by-field reading: /resources/guides/fmcsa-snapshot/. Official government search: SAFER Company Snapshot.
Is a DOT snapshot the same as an FMCSA snapshot or SAFER snapshot?
For the job you are trying to do, yes. DOT snapshot, FMCSA snapshot, SAFER snapshot, and SAFER company snapshot are the same public-research task under different names. SAFER is the official system name. Our separate guides cover the fields and the official walkthrough, and they link to each other.
Where do I pull an official DOT snapshot?
Official: safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx (search USDOT, MC, or name). Convenience lookup: the tool on this page or /tools/carrier-lookup/. For a narrative walkthrough of the government site see /resources/guides/safer-snapshot/. Confirm high-stakes facts on SAFER even if you started here.
Is Motus the DOT snapshot now?
No. Motus at motus.dot.gov is FMCSA’s USDOT registration system (it replaced URS and related legacy registration menus). Company Officials file biennials, authority, and identity changes in Motus. Brokers and shippers still pull the public snapshot in SAFER for inspections, crashes, and identity. Motus is filing; SAFER is the public card.
What happened on May 14, 2026?
FMCSA retired Unified Registration System (URS) and legacy FMCSA Portal registration functions beginning Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. ET as Motus became the registration system of record. You cannot start a new USDOT registration in URS after that cutoff. Confirm current filing instructions on motus.dot.gov and FMCSA’s Move into Motus page — do not use a 2024 URS tutorial.
Is the snapshot free?
Yes. Official SAFER Company Snapshot is free and requires no login. The lookup embedded here is also free. Do not pay a scrape site for the same public census data.
What should I check first on a DOT snapshot?
Authority status, insurance/surety on file, Out of Service date, identity match (legal name, USDOT, address, phone), MCS-150 age, then crash and inspection context versus fleet size. Authority or insurance missing is a hard stop for for-hire work.
Can I use a DOT snapshot as a credit report?
No. It is not days-to-pay, not a load-board score, and not a factoring file. Pair it with broker-credit tools if you are the carrier collecting freight charges, and with CSA/SMS if you need safety-percentile context.
Does O Trucking run Motus or FMCSA?
No. We are a dispatch and resources company. We are not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus. Official filing: motus.dot.gov. Official snapshot: SAFER. Do not send Login.gov passwords to us or to any commercial site.
Snapshot Looks Clean and You Need Freight — Not Motus Support
The primary tool on this page is the carrier lookup. O Trucking does not run Motus. Owner-operators with authority can talk dispatch after they have screened the broker or shipper the same way.
