FMCSA Snapshot: How to Pull a SAFER Company Snapshot

Brokers, shippers, insurers, and owner-operators still Google "FMCSA snapshot" before they tender freight. This hub explains what that public record is, how to read the go/no-go fields, and where Motus fits after the 2026 registration cutover.

Free FMCSA Snapshot Lookup

Search by USDOT number, MC number, company name, or phone. Demo queries already on the lookup: Matthews Logistics LLC (USDOT 2247289) and Schneider (MC 133655). Do not invent other example carriers.

Disclaimer: This lookup is a convenience wrapper around public FMCSA data and may lag or differ from the official record. For authority, insurance, or Out-of-Service decisions, re-check SAFER Company Snapshot and, for current Motus-era filings, motus.dot.gov. O Trucking is not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus. Quick Answer
An FMCSA snapshot is the public company view most people open in SAFER: identity, USDOT/MC, operation type, inspections, crashes, and insurance/authority status. Use O Trucking carrier lookup to find a carrier fast, then confirm high-stakes facts on official FMCSA tools. Motus is the filing system for the company official, not a replacement for the public snapshot. Field-by-field reading lives on our FMCSA Company Snapshot guide.

Key Takeaways

  • FMCSA snapshot and SAFER company snapshot are the same public-research job, different search phrases.
  • Search by USDOT for an exact match. Name search returns lookalikes.
  • Authorized authority + insurance on file are dealbreakers. An Out of Service date is a hard stop.
  • Motus (motus.dot.gov) is where the Company Official claims and updates the record. We are not affiliated with FMCSA.
  • Use this hub for the query and the go/no-go. Use the company-snapshot guide for every field on the card.

What people mean by FMCSA snapshot

There is no product inside FMCSA literally named "FMCSA snapshot." The record you want is the SAFER Company Snapshot: a concise electronic record of a company's identification, size, commodity information, and safety record, including the safety rating if any, a roadside out-of-service inspection summary, and crash information. FMCSA publishes it one carrier at a time, free, with no login.

Typical fields: legal name and DBA, physical and mailing address, phone, USDOT number, MC/MX/FF if issued, entity type (carrier, broker, freight forwarder), operation classification, cargo carried, power units and drivers from the last MCS-150, operating authority status, insurance/surety flags, Out of Service date if any, 24 months of inspections and crashes, and a safety rating of Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory, or none.

It is a research starting point. It is not a credit report, not days-to-pay, not a load-board score, and not Motus. For the official SAFER walkthrough see our SAFER Snapshot companion. For every labeled field on the card, stay on the FMCSA Company Snapshot reading guide.

The Google query itself is a job title, not a product name. A broker on a Friday afternoon, a factoring underwriter opening a new client, a shipper procurement analyst adding a preferred carrier, and a lease-on recruiter all type FMCSA snapshot because they want one public card they can screenshot. They are not asking for a Motus Login.gov session. They are not asking for CSA BASIC percentiles. They are asking: is this legal entity real, allowed to operate, and roughly as advertised.

That is why this hub exists separately from the field-by-field guide. The company-snapshot page already decodes entity type, cargo carried, BMC form names, inspection percentages, and rating labels. Cloning those boxes here would be a doorway. This page answers the search, runs the go/no-go, maps Motus versus SAFER versus L&I, and embeds a live lookup. If you already know the fields, skip to the checklist or the widget. If you need the official government search chrome, use the companion SAFER Snapshot.

The snapshot is a summary by design. Identity, size, cargo, a safety rating if FMCSA has issued one, 24 months of inspection out-of-service totals, and crash totals. CSA/SMS is the deeper percentile view. An MCS-150 last filed more than two years ago is a yellow flag. A populated Out of Service date is a hard stop. Our lookup is a convenience wrapper on public FMCSA data and may lag — re-check high-stakes decisions on official SAFER and Motus.

How to pull an FMCSA snapshot in 60 seconds

  1. Open the lookup above or otrucking.com/tools/carrier-lookup/ and search USDOT, MC, name, or phone.
  2. Prefer the USDOT number. Company-name search returns near-duplicates and DBAs that do not match the truck door.
  3. Read identity, equipment, and inspection context on the carrier page. Click through for the full public record.
  4. For a hiring, insurance, lease-on, or tender decision, confirm the same USDOT on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx. If you own the company, also confirm the live registration in Motus.
  5. Save a dated PDF. Brokers who skip this step lose arguments later when a double-brokered load goes unpaid.

Step-by-step on the government site: How to use the SAFER system.

Go / no-go checklist

Run these in order. Stop at the first hard no.

Authority. Must read Authorized for the work you are hiring. Not Authorized or revoked means they cannot legally haul for hire. See verify carrier authority.

Insurance / surety on file. For-hire carriers need BMC-91X liability (FMCSA minimum $750,000; many brokers require $1M). Brokers need BMC-84 or BMC-85 at $75,000. No filing, no load.

Out of Service date. If populated and current, the carrier cannot legally operate. Walk away.

Identity match. Legal name, USDOT, phone, and address should match the rate con, W-9, and COI. Mismatches are the classic identity-theft / double-broker pattern.

MCS-150 age. Biennial update more than two years old is a yellow flag, not an automatic no. FMCSA can deactivate a USDOT for a missed filing.

Safety record vs fleet size. Three crashes on a 2-truck operation is not the same as three crashes on a 100-truck fleet. Crash records do not assign fault. Pair the snapshot with CSA / SMS and safety ratings.

Verbal filings do not count

"Our insurance just went in yesterday" is not a snapshot. Wait until authority and insurance actually appear on SAFER, or call the insurer and get a written confirmation. Then re-pull the snapshot and save the PDF.

Motus-era notes (2026)

FMCSA's USDOT Registration System is Motus. Company Officials create a Login.gov identity, claim or apply for a USDOT, submit biennial updates, change name and address, add authority, and reinstate or inactivate a number. Public users can search an entity's registration record in Motus and view the FMCSA Register. Official explainer: Move into Motus.

Motus did not delete SAFER Company Snapshot. Brokers still pull the snapshot for identity, operating status, inspections, and crashes. Motus is where the people who own the USDOT keep the record current. Do not send Login.gov credentials to O Trucking or any commercial site.

Since the 2026 cutover, Licensing & Insurance (L&I) is the historical file. New Motus-era authority and insurance activity should be confirmed in Motus, not assumed from a stale L&I printout. SAFER remains the safety-oriented public card. For new Motus-era filings around the May 2026 transition, treat L&I as history-only. Current authority and insurance: Motus. Historical: L&I. Safety snapshot: SAFER. A blank L&I page is not proof a brand-new Motus-era carrier has no authority.

Public users can search registration in Motus without becoming the Company Official. That search still does not replace the SAFER Company Snapshot. Motus answers "what is on the registration record?" SAFER answers "what does the public safety card show for identity, inspections, crashes, OOS, and rating?" Motus is not a drop-in replacement for the public snapshot. Company Officials who need to apply, claim a USDOT, or file the biennial update do that at motus.dot.gov with a Login.gov identity. Never type those credentials into otrucking.com.

Insurance minima on the snapshot are filing flags, not a policy PDF. For-hire motor carrier liability on file with FMCSA is BMC-91X at $750,000. Many brokers still require a $1 million certificate even though that extra coverage is a commercial requirement, not the federal filing floor. Freight brokers file a BMC-84 surety bond or BMC-85 trust at $75,000. Do not invent other dollar amounts from a snapshot, and do not accept a verbal claim that a BMC-91X "just went in" until it shows on the official tools.

Common mistakes when you pull an FMCSA snapshot

  • Searching the DBA instead of the USDOT and booking the wrong twin company.
  • Treating "Not Rated" as unsafe. It usually means no full compliance review yet, which is normal for small fleets.
  • Judging crash counts without fleet size, or treating crash records as proof of fault.
  • Skipping the Out of Service date and the MCS-150 date because the headline status looks green.
  • Using the snapshot as the only risk tool. Pair it with CSA/SMS and a phone call to the number on SAFER, not the number in the email.
  • Paying a data broker for a PDF of the same public census file.

Call the number on SAFER, not the email signature

Double-broker scams hand you a real carrier's snapshot and a fake phone. Dial the number printed on the official snapshot (or Motus record), ask for dispatch, and confirm the load. If they never heard of the broker, stop.

Who actually searches "FMCSA snapshot"

Three desks generate most of this query. Freight brokers and 3PL ops teams screen a carrier before a tender. Insurance and factoring underwriters screen a new client before they bind or buy invoices. Owner-operators and small fleets screen the broker on the other side of a rate confirmation. Same public card, different decision. The broker is asking "can I legally put freight on this truck today?" The underwriter is asking "is the legal name on the application the same entity FMCSA knows?" The owner-operator is asking "is this broker even authorized, and is the $75,000 BMC-84/BMC-85 on file?"

That shared card is why the query clusters with "FMCSA company snapshot" and why we keep this hub, the field-by-field guide, and the SAFER companion on three canonical URLs. One decision page, one decoder, one official-tool walkthrough. If a page tried to be all three, Google would be right to treat it as thin duplication.

When the wrapper is enough — and when to open official SAFER

A readable commercial page is enough for a first pass: confirming a USDOT on a load-board posting exists, teaching a new broker what the public card looks like, or screening a long list of prospects before you invest a phone call. It is not enough the moment money or liability attaches.

Go official the same day you tender a first load, lease a truck on, onboard a factoring client, or bind cargo or auto liability. Re-check SAFER Company Snapshot and, for Motus-era registration and current filings, motus.dot.gov. Save a dated PDF of the government page. Name it with the date and USDOT. A commercial screen-grab is a memory aid; a dated official PDF is the audit trail.

The standalone product URL for the lookup is /tools/carrier-lookup/. This guide links that tool. It does not retitle itself as a competing branded lookup. If you only needed the widget, that URL is the one to bookmark.

FMCSA Snapshot FAQ

What is an FMCSA snapshot?

An FMCSA snapshot is the public company card most people mean when they search SAFER company snapshot: legal name, USDOT, MC if issued, address, fleet size, inspections, crashes, safety rating if any, and insurance/authority flags. The government viewer is SAFER Company Snapshot. O Trucking also publishes a readable lookup of the same public census-style data.

Is an FMCSA snapshot the same as a SAFER snapshot?

Yes for the job you are trying to do. Google queries for fmcsa snapshot, fmcsa company snapshot, safer snapshot, and safer company snapshot all want that public company view. SAFER is the official system name. FMCSA snapshot is the phrase people type.

Is a SAFER snapshot the same as Motus?

No. SAFER is a public research view of census and safety data. Motus at motus.dot.gov is FMCSA's USDOT registration system where the Company Official claims the record, files biennial updates, and applies for authority. Brokers look at snapshots. Company Officials file in Motus. O Trucking is not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus.

How do I look up a USDOT number for an FMCSA snapshot?

Use the lookup on this page or /tools/carrier-lookup/, then confirm anything that would change a hiring, insurance, or tender decision on official SAFER (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx) and, if you own the company, in Motus. Search by USDOT for an exact match. Name search can return near-duplicates.

Is the FMCSA snapshot free?

Yes. Official SAFER Company Snapshot is free and requires no account. O Trucking's lookup is also free with no login. Do not pay a scrape site for the same public census data.

How often is an FMCSA snapshot updated?

It pulls from FMCSA's MCMIS census and safety files, which refresh regularly. A filing that went in today — new insurance, reinstated authority, an MCS-150 — may not show yet. If a carrier says it just posted, wait until it appears on the official snapshot or confirm with the insurer or Motus before you book.

What should I check first on an FMCSA snapshot?

Authority status, then insurance on file, then Out of Service date, then identity match (legal name, USDOT, address, phone), then MCS-150 age, then crash and inspection rates relative to fleet size. Authority or insurance missing is a hard stop.

Can I print or save an FMCSA snapshot?

Yes. Use the browser print dialog and save as PDF. Name the file with the date and USDOT (for example 2026-09-01_USDOT-2247289.pdf) so you have an audit trail that you screened the carrier before you tendered.
