SAFER Snapshot: How to Read a SAFER Company Snapshot
A SAFER snapshot is the public FMCSA company card brokers pull before they tender. Here is how to run it on the official site, how it relates to an FMCSA snapshot search, and where Motus fits.
Key Takeaways
- SAFER snapshot and FMCSA snapshot searches target the same public company card.
- Official tool: Company Snapshot, search USDOT first, then confirm identity against the rate con.
- Motus is the Company Official filing system. SAFER did not go away in 2026.
- L&I is historical after the Motus cutover. Current authority/insurance: Motus. Safety card: SAFER.
- Re-check official SAFER before you hire or insure. Our lookup can lag.

SAFER Snapshot vs the Motus Registration Record
Official SAFER Company Snapshot walkthrough
Open safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx. FMCSA describes the Company Snapshot as a concise electronic record of a company's identification, size, commodity information, and safety record, including the safety rating if any, a roadside out-of-service inspection summary, and crash information. It is an ad-hoc query: one carrier at a time, free of charge.
Step 1. Choose USDOT Number, MC/MX Number, or Company Name.
Step 2. Enter the value. For name search, use the legal name, not the truck-door DBA, unless you already confirmed the DBA on a prior snapshot.
Step 3. Open the matching row. Confirm legal name, USDOT, and physical address against the rate confirmation before you read safety data.
Step 4. Print to PDF. Then, if the decision is money, repeat the same USDOT in our lookup only as a readable copy — the government page wins conflicts.

Bookmark the Company Snapshot URL itself, not a random SAFER submenu. The parent at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov hosts several query tools. Company Snapshot is the specific public company card. No FMCSA account. No Motus claim. No Login.gov. If a vendor asks you to "log into SAFER" to see a snapshot, that is not how the official tool works.
Want a readable first pass before you open the government page? Use carrier lookup. Demo queries already on that tool: Matthews Logistics LLC, USDOT 2247289; Schneider, MC 133655. We do not invent other example carriers, and we do not embed a second identical widget on this companion — the hub already has the live lookup. This page is the official-tool walkthrough. The government page wins conflicts.
USDOT vs MC vs company name
USDOT is the safety identifier painted on the truck. MC is for-hire operating authority. A private fleet can have a USDOT and no MC. A broker has authority without power units. If you only have an MC from a rate con, search MC, write down the USDOT, then search USDOT so you are not mixing two entities that share a similar name.
Company-name search is how people book the wrong lookalike. If the snapshot legal name does not match the W-9 and the certificate of insurance, stop. Identity theft of a real snapshot is the standard double-broker kit. Ask for the USDOT on the first call, then search that number on CompanySnapshot.aspx before you read a single crash total.
An MC-only search is the next-best unique key when the person on the phone remembers the docket and not the USDOT. Write down the USDOT from that result and search USDOT again so you are not mixing two entities that share a similar name. A private fleet can have a USDOT and no MC. A broker can hold authority without power units. Matching the identifier to the job you are hiring is part of the snapshot, not extra credit.
SAFER vs Motus vs L&I
Google treats "safer snapshot" and "fmcsa snapshot" as near-synonyms. Both want this public card. Motus is the 2026 registration portal for the people who own the USDOT. Public users can search a registration record in Motus, but that is not the same screen as Company Snapshot — Motus is Login.gov-gated for the Company Official and does not replace the no-login safety card.
Official Motus: motus.dot.gov. Do not enter Login.gov credentials on otrucking.com. We are not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus.

L&I after May 2026
Motus public search is registration identity. Company Officials use Login.gov to claim or update a USDOT; public users can still search registration without becoming the record owner. That search does not show the 24-month inspection out-of-service and crash card the way SAFER does. If you only search Motus, you can miss an Out of Service problem that still displays on SAFER. If you only search SAFER, you can misread a brand-new Motus-era authority or insurance filing that no longer behaves like an old L&I record. Use both. Motus is not a drop-in replacement for the public SAFER snapshot.
Practical L&I trap: a thin or blank L&I page on a carrier that just registered in Motus is not, by itself, proof they have no authority. Confirm current Motus-era filings on motus.dot.gov. A SAFER Snapshot with a populated Out of Service date is still a hard stop. A missing BMC-91X liability filing ($750,000 federal minimum for for-hire carriers; many brokers still want $1 million on the certificate) or a missing BMC-84/BMC-85 ($75,000 for brokers) is still a booking stop — confirm the current filing on Motus, not only on a historical L&I screen.
FMCSA's registration explainer is Move to Motus. Registration moved. The public safety snapshot did not get retired. O Trucking LLC is not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus. Never enter Login.gov credentials on this site.
What to read first on a SAFER snapshot
Same order as the FMCSA snapshot go/no-go: authority, insurance on file, Out of Service, identity match, MCS-150 age, then crash and inspection rates versus power units. Field-by-field labels live on FMCSA Company Snapshot. Authority walkthrough: verify carrier authority. Pair 24-month totals with CSA scores and FMCSA safety ratings when the haul is high-value. A blank safety rating on SAFER usually means no compliance review yet, which is common for small fleets — it is not a hidden Unsatisfactory.
This companion is not a spun second copy of the hub. The FMCSA Snapshot hub targets "FMCSA snapshot" / "FMCSA company snapshot," owns the go/no-go checklist, and embeds the live lookup. This page targets "safer snapshot" / "safer company snapshot," walks CompanySnapshot.aspx, and explains Motus public search versus SAFER versus L&I history. Canonical is this URL on purpose. Do not treat the two pages as duplicates.
Phone the snapshot, not the email
Print the official page the day you tender
Wrappers lag. Motus-era filings can take time to show on a commercial card. A carrier who says the BMC-91X "just went in" is asking you to take their word over FMCSA's. Open CompanySnapshot.aspx, confirm the USDOT, then print to PDF. If the haul depends on current authority or insurance for a Motus-era record, also open motus.dot.gov as a public search — still without pasting Login.gov credentials into a commercial site.
Keep the PDF with the rate confirmation. Filename with the date and USDOT. If the load later turns into a claim, a double-broker dispute, or an insurance question, you want the government page from the day you tendered, not a recollection of what a lookup showed after the fact. Our carrier lookup is a convenience wrapper on public FMCSA data. It may lag. It is not the official SAFER Snapshot.
MCS-150 currency still matters on the SAFER card: biennial, and last-filed more than two years ago is a yellow flag. Out of Service remains a hard stop regardless of how clean the rest of the card looks. Crash totals do not assign fault; read them against power units, then open CSA/SMS when you need a ranking, not just a yes or no.
SAFER Snapshot FAQ
What is a SAFER snapshot?
A SAFER snapshot is FMCSA's public Company Snapshot: identity, USDOT, authority flags, insurance flags, fleet size, 24 months of inspections and crashes, and a safety rating if one exists. People also search this as FMCSA snapshot.
Where is the official SAFER Company Snapshot?
https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx. Search by USDOT number, MC/MX number, or company name. No account. O Trucking carrier lookup is an independent readable page of public census-style data — still re-check official SAFER for high-stakes decisions.
Did Motus replace SAFER?
No. Motus at motus.dot.gov is the USDOT registration system (claim, apply, biennial update). SAFER Company Snapshot remains the public safety-oriented card. O Trucking is not affiliated with FMCSA, USDOT, or Motus.
Should I search SAFER by name or USDOT?
USDOT. Name search returns lookalikes and DBAs. If you only have an MC, search MC to get the USDOT, then re-search USDOT so you are on the exact record.
What is the difference between SAFER and L&I?
SAFER Company Snapshot is the identity and safety summary. Licensing & Insurance (L&I) is the historical authority and insurance file. After the 2026 Motus cutover, current filings belong in Motus; use L&I when you need history that is not represented on the snapshot.
Is SAFER Company Snapshot free?
Yes. One carrier at a time, no login, no fee. You do not need a commercial PDF of the same public record.
How do I save a SAFER snapshot?
Browser print to PDF. Include the date and USDOT in the filename. Keep it with the rate con if you later have to prove you screened the carrier.
What does Out of Service on a SAFER snapshot mean?
A populated current Out of Service date means FMCSA ordered the carrier to stop operating. Do not book. Not Authorized is a different (still fatal) status — no active for-hire authority.
