Hotshot Lease-On FAQs

Specific questions about leasing on with a hotshot.

Is hotshot really worth it vs a full semi?

Hotshot has lower entry cost ($60–100k vs $150–250k for a semi-and-trailer setup) and works for drivers who want to start fast. Per-mile pay is lower than tractor work, but per-load premiums (urgency surcharges) make up some of the gap. Better for drivers who already own a 1-ton pickup.

Where's the freight?

Texas oilfield (Permian Basin, Eagle Ford), construction-heavy markets (Florida, Texas, Phoenix), and agricultural regions are the strongest hotshot markets. We dispatch into these consistently.

Do I need a CDL?

Yes if your rig's combined GVWR exceeds 26,000 lbs — which is most hotshot setups. A 1-ton dually pulling a 40 ft gooseneck almost always crosses that threshold. We can help confirm your specific weight class.
