What this means

NHTSA owner-complaint data is unfiltered: it's a record of what truck owners reported as problems on their vehicles. 7,989 complaints across 13 commercial-truck makes are in our database. A single complaint doesn't prove a defect — but when 50+ owners report the same component on the same truck make/model/year, that's a real signal. We aggregate by make/model/year so you can spot patterns before buying or to understand what to watch for if you already own a particular truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are NHTSA owner complaints verified?
No — NHTSA collects complaints from owners but doesn't verify each one individually. Each complaint is an owner's first-hand report. The value is in the aggregate: when many owners report the same component on the same vehicle, that's signal. A single complaint isn't proof of a defect. Pay attention to (1) total complaint volume per make/model/year, (2) consistency of described symptoms, and (3) whether NHTSA has opened a formal investigation or issued a recall on the same component.
How do owner complaints lead to recalls?
NHTSA monitors complaint patterns. When a specific component shows up repeatedly on a specific make/model/year, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) can open a 'preliminary evaluation' — that becomes public on NHTSA.gov. If the evaluation finds a likely safety defect, it escalates to an 'engineering analysis,' and ultimately can require the manufacturer to issue a recall. The timeline from complaint pattern to recall is typically 6 months to 2 years. Filing a complaint is the input that triggers this entire chain.
How do I file my own complaint?
Visit NHTSA.gov/file-complaint. You'll need your VIN, the date of incident, a description of what happened, and the component affected. Filing takes about 10 minutes and adds your data point to the public record. For commercial trucks, fleet operators reporting at scale (10+ similar reports from one fleet) often accelerate NHTSA's review timeline. There's no fee and no requirement to be the original owner.
Should I avoid a truck model with high complaint counts?
Not automatically. Two factors matter more than total count: (1) Complaint rate vs. trucks sold — a model with 200,000 units on the road and 500 complaints has a much lower rate than a model with 20,000 units and 200 complaints. (2) Severity — 5 complaints about brake failures matter more than 50 complaints about radio issues. Use the per-model pages to see component breakdowns and recent trends. Compare against the same model in different years to see if specific years had issues.
What's the difference between complaints, recalls, and TSBs?
Complaints are owner-submitted reports — unfiltered, can be anything. Recalls are manufacturer-mandated SAFETY repairs — federally tracked, free, required. TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) are manufacturer guidance to dealers about known issues — usually NOT free; owners pay parts and labor. Order of severity: TSBs document quality issues, complaints signal potential safety issues, recalls confirm safety defects requiring action. All three are useful but represent different stages of the issue lifecycle.
