Port Trucking Jobs 2026
Key Takeaways
- Drayage is the CDL job. Terminal staff is a different employer. Do not mash them on one resume.
- TWIC is TSA, not a CDL endorsement. Start it before you apply to Maher-gate or JAXPORT carriers.
- Maher, JAXPORT, and Port of Wilmington are cluster sections on this national URL — not thin employer pages.
- Georgia Ports Authority jobs stay on georgia-ports-authority-jobs. We will not retarget GPA from here.
- Pay is hourly or per-move. Congestion and chassis decide the year more than a job-board tile.
- Seats we list: /careers/. Owner-operators with authority: /dispatch/. We do not hire for Maher or JAXPORT.

What Port Trucking Jobs Actually Are
A port trucking job, in the way drivers mean it, is drayage: you hook a chassis, pick a container at a marine terminal or rail ramp, run local or regional miles, and drop at a warehouse, a transload, or a consignee yard. The product is a box. The clock is the appointment window, the gate queue, and the warehouse that will not receive after 15:00. The skill that separates this from OTR dry van is not the steering wheel. It is the ninety minutes in a stacked terminal when the chassis is bald, the can is overweight on one tandem, and the clerk is not going to teach you twist-locks.
Searchers type Maher terminal jobs, JAXPORT jobs, and Port of Wilmington jobs because those names are on the fence. Some of them want a port-authority or terminal-operator staff job. Most CDL searchers want the trucking seat that pulls that gate. Search engines mash those intents. Hiring managers do not. This page is the routing layer for the CDL drayage job nationwide, with those three complexes as cluster sections — not employer microsites.
Related hubs, not clones: drayage trucking guide, intermodal trucking, intermodal drayage explained, day cab for drayage, CDL jobs, and how to get a TWIC card. Those pages cover equipment and the credential. This URL owns the port-adjacent hire.
TWIC and What the Gate Actually Wants
Unescorted access to a maritime Transportation Security Incident facility is a TSA TWIC problem, not a CDL endorsement problem. Maher, JAXPORT terminals, Wilmington marine terminals, and most gated U.S. box ports will not let you wander. Escorts exist for vendors and first-day visitors. They are not how you make a living. Official process: TSA TWIC. Our walkthrough: how to get a TWIC card, plus TWIC cost, disqualifications, and TWIC vs hazmat.
- Usually required for the CDL seat: Class A, air brakes, valid med card, TWIC for unescorted maritime, MVR the cargo insurer will accept.
- Often required by the carrier: RFID or terminal-specific transponder, appointment-system login, sometimes a TWIC reader in the cab, sometimes hazmat if the box is placarded.
- Usually not the gate: passenger (P), tanker (N), doubles (T). If the posting is actually a fuel rack inside a port, that is a tanker job with a TWIC — different URL.
English-language proficiency and non-domiciled CDL rules still apply the same as any interstate seat. A clean PSP matters because terminals and shippers bounce carriers with ugly CSA. Wider context: new CDL driver first year.
Maher, JAXPORT, and Port of Wilmington — Cluster, Not Doorways
GSC shows Maher terminal jobs, JAXPORT jobs, and Port of Wilmington jobs as a cluster. That is name recognition at the fence. It is not a reason to publish three thin employer URLs. Use the table, then apply to the motor carrier — or to the authority HR page if you actually want a staff job.
| Name people search | Where | CDL hire reality | Trap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maher / NY-NJ | Elizabeth–Newark complex | Drayage carriers with gate appointments | Maher is a terminal operator, not your CDL employer by default |
| JAXPORT | Jacksonville, FL | Blount Island, Talleyrand, Dames Point drayage | JAXPORT jobs also means authority staff — read the posting |
| Wilmington NC | Port of Wilmington, NC | Regional drayage and some terminal contractors | Do not confuse with Wilmington DE |
| Wilmington DE | Port of Wilmington, DE | Smaller complex; fruit, juice, breakbulk mix | Same search string, different harbor |
| Savannah / Brunswick | GPA complex | Covered on the GPA jobs URL | Do not retarget that cluster from this page |
| LA / LB, Houston, Seattle, Charleston | Other U.S. box ports | Same TWIC + chassis + appointment logic | Clean Truck, CARB, and pier-pass cousins differ by coast |
Maher (NY/NJ)
Maher Terminals is a marine terminal operator in the Port of New York and New Jersey, not a mega-carrier. CDL drivers pull Maher, APM, PNCT, and other Elizabeth–Newark gates for drayage companies. Tolls, congestion pricing, and appointment discipline are the local tax. Union longshore is not your CDL seat. If you want Maher corporate or terminal staff, use their careers page — not a content farm with their name in the slug.
JAXPORT
Jacksonville’s port complex (Blount Island, Talleyrand, Dames Point and related terminals) mixes containers, autos, and bulk. Auto-transport that happens to pull JAXPORT is a car-hauler job — see car hauler jobs. Container drayage is this page. JAXPORT jobs as an authority posting is their HR portal. Do not treat a Jacksonville Facebook ad as the port authority.
Wilmington (NC and DE)
Port of Wilmington, North Carolina (often ILM in driver talk) is a growing container and bulk harbor with regional drayage into the Carolinas. Port of Wilmington, Delaware is a different harbor with fruit, juice, and breakbulk in the mix. The search string is identical. Read the state. Neither deserves a doorway URL that only exists to rank the query.
The same method works at Houston, Charleston, Seattle–Tacoma, Oakland, and LA/LB. Clean Truck, CARB, pier-pass, and appointment brands change. TWIC, chassis, and a motor carrier on the door do not. Oahu’s port overlay is a different island labor market — CDL jobs Oahu.
Port Trucking Pay in 2026 (Models, Not Memes)
Drayage pay is famous on forums because a good day of turns looks like a raise versus van. A bad day — two-hour inbound, a bad chassis, a warehouse that closed the door — looks like you should have stayed on dedicated grocery. There is no single national hourly.
| Seat | Typical 2026 Band | What Changes the Number |
|---|---|---|
| Company drayage, hourly | $22–$35/hr | Overtime when gates run late; congestion is the variable |
| Company per-move / per-load | $55k–$85k busy year | Turns, not the brochure, decide the year |
| Rail ramp / near-dock shuttle | $23–$32/hr | Shorter cycle; still TWIC at some complexes |
| Owner-operator per container | Lane-specific gross | Chassis, fuel, tolls, and gate time eat the screenshot |
| Terminal staff (not this URL) | Employer scale | Apply on the authority or operator career page |
Five questions before you sign: hourly or per-move; who pays when the terminal rolls the appointment; chassis rental on you or the carrier; detention after how many hours; and what did the median driver take home last year, not the recruiter’s nephew. Compare with intermodal trucking pay and company driver salary.
Ask for last year’s median turns, not the Facebook high
Chassis, Appointments, and Why Turns Are the Job
The chassis is the trailer under the box. Pools, terminal-owned sets, and street turns decide whether you wait. Inspect lights, brakes, tires, twist-locks, landing gear, and the CSC plate before you leave the pile. A bad can is a CSA event and a claims file. Equipment cousins: intermodal chassis guide, chassis inspection, chassis pool, chassis fees.
Appointments are the new weigh station. Miss the window and you eat the day. Overweight import on one tandem is a scale problem you own on the public road — federal bridge formula, sliding tandems. Hours of service still apply after the gate; waiting in line is on-duty. See HOS rules 2026 and detention time and pay.
Georgia Ports Authority — Linked, Not Retargeted
Savannah and Brunswick are enormous U.S. box and auto complexes. Searchers already have a dedicated, honest URL for GPA staff versus Savannah drayage: Georgia Ports Authority jobs. This national port-trucking page will not steal that cluster, will not reprint GPA pay bands as if they were Maher’s, and will not rank a second Savannah doorway. If your commute is Garden City Terminal, use that guide. If your commute is Elizabeth, Jacksonville, or Wilmington, stay here.
Name on the fence is not the motor carrier
How to Get Hired in 2026
The hire is a motor carrier with intermodal accounts, not a Facebook marketplace day cab. Pull the USDOT. Match the legal name. Start TWIC early.
- 1
Confirm Class A, medical card, and MVR. Start or renew TWIC. If you have van time and no port time, say so. Lying about chassis dies at the pile.
- 2
Get the USDOT. Snapshot it on how to use SAFER and carrier lookup. A recruiter who will not give a DOT number is not a carrier.
- 3
Ask terminals they actually pull (Maher, JAXPORT, Wilmington, rail), pay model, chassis policy, and home time in writing. Use the company-driver question list.
- 4
Apply on the carrier career page and on otrucking.com/careers. Terminal-operator staff jobs go on that operator’s HR site. Indeed is a lead source, not verification.
Company driver path
Most searchers. Fleet owns the iron, trains the gate system, pays hourly or per-move. Compare with company driver vs owner-operator. Do not let a recruiter convert you to a day-cab lease on day two.
Owner-operator path
You already know chassis, you can stand insurance, and you have port relationships. Dispatch for authority holders is /dispatch/. Port freight is appointment and equipment-fit, not a random DAT van posting with containers in the commodity line. See intermodal owner-operator.

Company seats we list: /careers/. TWIC: how to get a TWIC card. GPA cluster: Georgia Ports Authority jobs. We will not pretend a dispatch desk is Maher HR.
What a Day Actually Looks Like
You are not logging 600 miles of drop-and-hook. You are mixing a 04:30 pre-trip with an appointment, a chassis hunt, a gate that is on delay, and a warehouse that takes live unloads. A regional day might be two boxes and 180 miles. A bad day is one box and six hours in line. Physical work is climbing, cranking landing gear, and checking seals. Weather is not a dispatcher’s problem when the stack is wet and the can is high.
Parking a day cab with a 40-foot can is still geometry. Overnight habits live on our truck-stop pages. The port-specific risk is someone walking between stacks and a chassis with no lights on a dark street. Lock, light, and do not advertise a loaded high-value box on an open channel. See personal safety.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do port trucking jobs require a TWIC card?
Unescorted access to maritime facilities almost always does. TWIC is a TSA credential, not a CDL endorsement. Maher, JAXPORT terminals, Wilmington marine terminals, and most gated container yards will not let you roam without it. Escorts exist for visitors; they are not a career plan. Start the application early — it is not a same-week card. Disqualifying offenses and renewals live on our TWIC guides. This page owns the drayage seat that needs the card.
What is the difference between a port authority job and a drayage trucking job?
A port authority or marine-terminal staff job is a W-2 (sometimes union) role on the terminal’s payroll: clerk, checker, mechanic, police, crane, gate. A port trucking job is a CDL seat for a motor carrier that pulls containers between the terminal, a rail ramp, a warehouse, or a consignee. Searchers type Maher terminal jobs and JAXPORT jobs meaning both. This URL is the trucking seat. Georgia Ports Authority employment already has its own guide — we will not retarget GPA here.
How much do port trucking / drayage jobs pay in 2026?
Treat every number as a band. Company drayage drivers commonly land around $22 to $35 an hour or a per-move / per-load model that pencils to roughly $55,000 to $85,000 in a busy year when turns actually happen. Owner-operator gross per container looks huge until chassis, fuel, tolls, and a four-hour gate eat the day. Congestion, appointment no-shows, and street-turn rules change take-home more than the brochure rate. Ask last year’s median turns, not the Facebook high.
Are Maher terminal jobs the same as NY/NJ port trucking jobs?
Maher Terminals is a major marine terminal operator at the Port of New York and New Jersey (Elizabeth / Newark complex). People search Maher terminal jobs because that name is on the gate. Most CDL searchers will not be hired by Maher as crane operators; they will be hired by a drayage carrier that has a gate appointment at Maher, APM, PNCT, or another NY/NJ terminal. This is a national drayage guide with Maher as a cluster section, not a thin employer page.
Do I need experience for JAXPORT or Port of Wilmington jobs?
Terminal staff postings follow that employer’s HR rules. Drayage carriers at JAXPORT and at Port of Wilmington (North Carolina, and separately Delaware) often hire Class A drivers with a TWIC, a clean MVR, and the patience to wait. Some want six to twelve months of tractor-trailer time so they are not teaching backing on the same week they teach chassis. Brand-new CDL holders can get trained; they should not sign a balloon note on a day cab to skip the training seat.
Is port trucking local or over-the-road?
Drayage is overwhelmingly local and regional: port or rail to warehouse, often home nightly, sometimes a 200-mile inland move. That is the point of the job for drivers leaving OTR. A minority of carriers mix port pulls with longer intermodal lanes. If a posting promises OTR port miles, read the equipment and the appointment system twice. Day cabs dominate. Sleepers exist; they are not the default Maher or JAXPORT gate truck.
What is a chassis and why do port drivers care?
The chassis is the trailer frame the container sits on. You do not always own it. Pools, terminal chassis, and street-turn rules decide whether you wait two hours for a legal set of tires. Inspection at the gate is the job: lights, brakes, twist-locks, landing gear, and a CSC plate that is not expired. Our chassis and intermodal guides own the equipment. This page owns why the hire cares whether you will refuse a bad can.
Does O Trucking hire port drivers or work for Maher or JAXPORT?
No. O Trucking LLC is a dispatch and resources company. We are not Maher, not JAXPORT, not the Port of Wilmington, and not GPA. We do not charge drivers for placement. Company-driver openings we actually list live on /careers/. Owner-operators with authority who want freight start at /dispatch/. This page is independent editorial so you can tell a real drayage seat from a thin terminal-name doorway.
Why This Is Its Own URL
Search intent is drayage work, not three employer doorways
Competing pages ranked thin Maher terminal jobs, JAXPORT jobs, and Port of Wilmington jobs URLs. Drivers want TWIC, pay, chassis, and how to get hired in any harbor that actually has boxes. Those three names are in the cluster section because GSC shows them — not because we cloned HR departments. GPA stays on its own guide.
We dispatch carriers; we do not staff terminals
O Trucking will not rank a lease-purchase mill with a terminal name in the title. If you want a company seat, use /careers/. If you already hold authority, talk dispatch.
Looking for a Port or Drayage Seat — or Freight for Iron You Already Own?
Company-driver seekers should start at /careers/. Owner-operators with authority can talk dispatch. O Trucking is not Maher, JAXPORT, GPA, or a CDL school.
