The fifth wheel is the saddle on the tractor frame that locks the trailer kingpin. Pins, Holes, Air Slide vs Manual

The slider is a pair of rails with holes or teeth. Two locking pins (sometimes more on specialty plates) drop through those holes and hold the fifth wheel in that notch. Air-slide and electric-over-air plates use a dash switch or a valve to retract the pins. Two different locks live in the same neighborhood and new drivers mash the names. The fifth-wheel jaws (the lock that grabs the kingpin) keep the trailer attached.
