Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my truck has open recalls?
Three ways: (1) Enter your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls — free and authoritative. (2) Call any OEM dealer for your truck make and provide the VIN — they'll look up open campaigns and schedule the repair. (3) Use our VIN decoder at /vin/ which cross-references against our recall database. Recall service is always free at the OEM dealer.
Is recall service really free?
Yes — federal law requires the manufacturer to pay for the recall repair regardless of the truck's age, mileage, or current owner. The only exception: if the recall is more than 10 years old, some manufacturers can decline (rare for commercial trucks). Parts and labor are covered. Some dealers charge a 'diagnostic fee' that they later refund — push back if you see that.
Can a carrier operate trucks with open recalls?
Federal law doesn't prohibit operating commercial trucks with open recalls — only some passenger-vehicle resale rules apply. But: (1) safety-critical recalls (brakes, steering, fuel system) should be addressed immediately for liability reasons. (2) Insurance carriers increasingly track open-recall status when setting premiums. (3) Shippers and brokers sometimes ask carriers to confirm recall status before contract loads. (4) If the recall defect is visible at a DOT inspection (cracked brake line, leaking fuel line), it can result in an out-of-service violation.
How long do recall repairs usually take?
Most NHTSA recalls take 1–4 hours of dealer shop time. Brake-line and steering-component recalls are usually 2-3 hours. Fuel-system and DEF-related recalls can run 4-8 hours. Major recalls (e.g., NOx catalyst replacement) can be a full day. Schedule when you have time — many dealers will prioritize commercial trucks but appointments fill up fast after a recall is announced. Some dealers offer mobile recall service for fleet customers.
What's the difference between an NHTSA recall and a TSB?
An NHTSA recall is a manufacturer-mandated SAFETY repair — free, federally required, and tracked by NHTSA. A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer telling dealers about a known issue and the recommended fix — TSBs are usually NOT free; owners pay parts and labor. Recalls address safety defects; TSBs address quality and reliability issues that don't rise to safety concerns. If you're seeing a problem that ISN'T listed as a recall, search the manufacturer's TSB database — there may be a documented fix.
