What does this lookup tool actually tell me about a plate?
Each plate page shows every VIN that's been registered under that plate (in case it was transferred), every DOT number that's operated the vehicle, total inspection count, out-of-service results, and the dates of most-recent activity. We don't show the registered owner's name — that's protected by state DPPA laws and only available through DMV records with a written request. What we show is operational data from FMCSA roadside inspections.
How often is the plate database updated?
Our license-plate inspection records come from FMCSA's SMS Input - Inspection dataset, which is republished monthly by the federal government. Once a month our automated sync pulls the latest snapshot, refreshing all 5+ million vehicle records. Inspections older than 24 months drop out of the SMS window (that's an FMCSA rule, not ours). If you don't see a very recent inspection, give it 30-60 days for FMCSA to publish.
Can I use this to find a stolen truck or runaway driver?
Indirectly. If you have a plate number from a sighting, you can search it here to see if FMCSA has any historical inspection records for that plate. That gives you the operating carrier's DOT number, which then leads to the carrier's full address and contact info on their /carrier/ profile page. For active stolen-vehicle alerts, contact your local police — they have access to NCIC databases that include real-time stolen-vehicle data we don't.
Why do I sometimes see strange-looking plate numbers?
Commercial license plates vary widely by state. Some states issue dedicated commercial plates with letter prefixes (CA's 'CMRC' series, TX's 'L' series), others use the same passenger format. Apportioned (IRP) plates for interstate carriers can have unique formats. Trailer plates are often shorter or use 'TR' prefixes. The plates in our data are as they appear in the FMCSA inspection report — we don't normalize them, so a plate may appear with or without dashes depending on how the inspector entered it.
Is it legal to look up a license plate?
Yes — looking up FMCSA-published commercial inspection data is fully public-record use. The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) restricts looking up personal owner information from DMV records, but does not restrict the federally-published operational safety data we surface here. We deliberately don't display owner names or home addresses. If you need owner identification for legal purposes (subpoena, insurance claim, court order), work through proper legal channels.
