What this means

Beyond engines, transmissions, and axles, commercial trucks rely on dozens of major component systems — each with their own suppliers, generations, problems, and maintenance schedules. We've catalogued 44 key commercial-truck components covering Brakes (Bendix, Haldex, WABCO ABS + ADB + drum + collision mitigation), Aftertreatment (Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Volvo/Mack, International emissions systems), Suspension (Hendrickson air ride + competitors), Telematics (Samsara, Motive, Geotab, Lytx, Verizon Connect, Omnitracs, Trimble, Platform Science), Tires (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Cooper, Yokohama, BFGoodrich, Double Coin), Reefer Units (Carrier Vector, Thermo King Precedent, Mitsubishi TU), and APUs (Thermo King TriPac, Carrier ComfortPro, Idle Free, Espar, RigMaster, OEM electric). Each component page covers design, generations, reliability, common DTC codes, and maintenance schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What component categories are covered?
Currently: Brakes (ABS/ESC controllers, air-disc + drum foundation brakes, collision mitigation systems), Aftertreatment (DPF + DEF + SCR systems by OEM), and Suspension (air-ride systems). Coming: Telematics/ELD (Samsara, Motive, Geotab, Lytx), Tires (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear), Cooling, HVAC. Each component category gets a dedicated sub-hub with editorial overview, supplier comparison, and per-component detail pages.
Why is brake CSA scoring so important?
Brake violations are the most-cited category in FMCSA roadside inspections — about 30-40% of all Vehicle Maintenance BASIC citations. Common brake violations (393.45 brake hose chafing, 393.47 brake lining defect, 393.48 brake adjustment) carry 4-8 severity weights and many are out-of-service eligible. Fleet brake PM directly drives CSA scores — managing this BASIC starts at the brake bay.
Can I tamper with the DPF or DEF system?
No. DPF/DEF tampering is a federal violation of the Clean Air Act (42 USC 7522) with EPA fines up to $5,000 per violation. CARB in California has zero tolerance. State enforcement varies. Many owner-operators in oil-field service delete DPF anyway, accepting the risk. Insurance carriers may deny coverage on deleted trucks. **For on-road operation, do not delete emissions equipment.**
Which brake supplier is best for my fleet?
Both Bendix and Haldex/WABCO/ZF are excellent. Bendix dominates North American tractor ABS/ESC (Wingman Fusion, EC-80/EB-80). Haldex (now SAF-Holland) dominates trailer EBS. WABCO/ZF is stronger in European-influenced specs (Volvo, Mack, IVECO). For a fleet decision: pick based on dealer support in your region and any existing supplier preference. Most fleets standardize on one tractor brake supplier (usually Bendix) to simplify parts and tech training.
Why does aftertreatment fail so often?
Modern aftertreatment (DPF + DEF + SCR) is the #1 source of unscheduled diesel truck downtime. Major fleets budget $0.05-0.15/mile for aftertreatment maintenance. Common failures: DEF heater (cold weather), NOx sensors (200-400K miles), DPF face plugging (short trips/idle), EGR cooler cracking. EPA emissions mandates are unavoidable — fleets manage cost via good PM practices and selecting OEMs with stronger aftertreatment reliability (Detroit and Volvo/Mack score higher than PACCAR and Cummins in some 2010-2017 era surveys; gap has closed post-2018).
