About Ram Truck (Chassis Cab)

Ram Truck became a standalone brand in 2010 (previously sold as Dodge Ram). Ram's commercial lineup includes the 3500 (Class 3), 4500 (Class 4), and 5500 (Class 5) chassis cabs. All Ram Heavy Duty diesel trucks use the Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel inline-6 — the same engine architecture (smaller displacement) used in commercial heavy-duty trucks. This engine + chassis combination makes Ram particularly popular with hotshot trucking, RV hauling, and severe-duty pickup applications.

Company history

Dodge Ram brand was introduced in 1981 with the second-generation Ram pickup. Cummins partnered with Dodge in 1989 to offer the 5.9L Cummins inline-6 diesel — the first Cummins-powered medium-duty pickup. The Cummins partnership has been continuous since. Dodge separated the Ram brand from Dodge in 2010 to focus exclusively on trucks. Cummins 6.7L replaced the 5.9L in 2007 to meet stricter emissions standards. Stellantis was formed in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot SA.

Market position and reputation

Ram holds approximately 20-25% of the diesel-powered Class 3 chassis cab market. The Cummins 6.7L is the only inline-6 diesel offered in this segment (Ford and GM use V8 diesels), giving Ram a torque advantage and modest fuel economy edge under load. Ram is the dominant hotshot trucking truck — the Ram 3500 dually with Cummins is the de facto choice for owner-operators getting into hotshot.
